The modern transverse automatics, the GM 6T40, 6T70 and 9T-series and the Ford 6F35 and 6F50, run scarf-cut and solid Teflon sealing rings on the clutch pistons and hubs, and those rings are unforgiving. Stretch one over the groove by hand and it distorts; force it home with a screwdriver or a pick and you pinch, twist, or nick it. You will not know until the unit is buttoned up, on the car, and leaking pressure past a clutch that will not hold, which means pulling it all back apart. This kit is the cheap step that keeps that from happening.
It is a two-piece installer that gives you a smooth, controlled action to open the ring just enough to slip it over the shaft or hub and then guide it down square into its groove. That matters most in the tight, blind areas inside the valve body and around the drum where there is no room to work a ring on by feel. The tapered, non-marring plastic supports the ring the whole way in and will not gouge or scratch the soft seal or the aluminum bore the way a metal tool does.
