10R80 Piston Compressor and Snap Ring Removal Kit 3-Piece

Three-piece piston compressor and snap ring removal set for the Ford 10R80 and the GM 10L80. It covers F-150 2017-2023, Mustang 2018-2021, Expedition 2018-2021, Ranger 2019-2021 and Explorer 2020-2021. The plates are sized to the 10R80 clutch drums and are used in a shop press or an arbor press - foot-operated or hydraulic both work.

The 10R80 is a ten-speed with six clutch packs stacked in a short case, and the return springs are stiff. Compressing one of those pistons with a C-clamp or a screwdriver against the retainer cocks the piston in the bore, and the snap ring either will not clear the groove or goes back in crooked and shaves the drum wall on the first apply. These plates put load on the retainer square across its face, so the ring groove opens up evenly and the ring comes out with a pick instead of a fight.

The three pieces cover the different drum diameters in the unit so you are not shimming one plate to fit every pack. Materials are a high-density alloy chosen so the plate holds its round section after repeated press cycles - a compressor plate that ovals out is worse than no plate, because it loads one side of the retainer and pushes the piston over.

How it goes on the bench: set the drum on the press bed, seat the matching plate on the piston return spring retainer, bring the ram down until the snap ring groove is fully exposed, pull the ring with a pick or snap ring pliers, then release the ram slowly and lift the retainer and spring out. Reverse it for assembly and confirm the ring is fully seated all the way around the groove before the drum goes back in the case. Always confirm the fitment photos against your drum before ordering.
