Compresses clutch piston return springs on Ford 10R80 and GM 10L80 drums so you can pull and install the snap ring without damaging the spring or drum.
A clutch drum spring compressor made for the Ford 10R80 ten-speed and the shared GM 10L80. It is shaped to the drum profiles in these units, so it presses down evenly on the piston return spring assembly instead of loading one side the way a universal compressor or a pry bar does.
The contact points are slim enough to leave room at recessed snap ring grooves, which is where most 10R80 teardowns get stuck. Set the tool on the spring retainer, bring the spring down just far enough to unload the snap ring, remove the ring, then release slowly and lift out the spring and piston. Reverse the steps on reassembly after the new piston seals or bonded piston are in.
Uneven compression is how return spring cages get bent and drum snap ring grooves get chewed up, and on a 10R80 either one turns a clutch job into a parts order. This tool is intended for 10R80 and 10L80 units only; do not use it on other transmissions.
