The 42RLE shares its clutch layout with the front-drive 41TE, and it fails the same ways: the underdrive or 2-4 clutch pack burns up, the 2-4 piston seal leaks and it starts in second, or the pump bushing wears and drops line pressure. Soak new frictions in ATF+4 before assembly, measure every clutch pack clearance with a feeler gauge, and replace the filter and all sealing rings. After the rebuild the transmission needs a quick learn with a capable scan tool or the shifts will be harsh until it relearns.
