47RE Overdrive Clutch Spring Compressor Tool T-1302

The overdrive unit in a Chrysler A518/A618 holds its direct clutch return spring under real load, and that spring cage is retained by nothing but a snap ring. Pop the ring with a screwdriver and the cage comes at you. This T-1302 compressor seats over the overdrive direct clutch pack and screws the spring cage straight down so the snap ring lifts out with a pick, under control, every time.

Fits the 1989-up A500 and 42RE, the 1991-up A518 (46RE) and A618 (47RE), and the 2003-up 48RE. That covers the overdrive units under Dodge Ram 1500/2500/3500, Dakota, Durango, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee applications that share the A500 case. It works the same on the way back in: stack the cage and spring, run the screw down until the snap ring groove clears, seat the ring, then back the tool off.

This is the tool you reach for when you are in the overdrive housing for a burnt direct clutch, a cracked overdrive piston, or a 47RE that will not hold fourth. The frame is heavy-duty steel with a rust-preventive coating on the machined surfaces, and the center screw turns by hand knob rather than a wrench, so you can feel the spring load as you compress it.
