Indexes the overdrive splines on Dodge 46RE, 47RE and 48RE transmissions so the overdrive unit slides onto the shaft and seats square.
This is the alignment tool that indexes the overdrive unit splines on the Dodge A518 and A618 family automatics - 46RH, 46RE, 47RH, 47RE and 48RE - so the overdrive section will slide onto the intermediate shaft instead of hanging up an inch short. It fits the diesel and gas Ram trucks that used those units, including the 5.9L Cummins trucks running the 47RE and 48RE.
The job it solves shows up on every one of these rebuilds. The overdrive housing carries the direct clutch hub and planetary, and all of that has to clock onto the shaft splines at the same time as the case dowels line up. Blind, you end up rotating the whole overdrive section by hand, tapping it, pulling it back off, and repeating - and each dry attempt is a chance to nick the hub splines or knock the thrust washer out of place. With the tool on the shaft the splines are held in the right index, so the overdrive unit drops on square and pulls up with the bolts rather than with a hammer.
Use it on the bench with the transmission standing on the bellhousing or laid over on a fixture. Set the tool on the output end, roll the overdrive section until it seats, then remove the tool before you torque the case bolts. It is a small tool - 5.9 ounces - and it lives in the same drawer as the rest of your 47RE and 48RE service tools.
