Replaces the cracked or worn 4x4 tailshaft housing that mounts the NP271 or NP273 transfer case to the 48RE on 2003-2009 Ram 2500/3500 Cummins.
This is the overdrive extension housing, sometimes called the tailshaft or adapter housing, that bolts to the back of the 48RE automatic and carries the transmission output shaft into the transfer case on four-wheel-drive Rams. It is the OE-style replacement for part numbers 5093166AA and 5093166AB (also stamped 22770GA).
These aluminum housings crack. The usual spots are the transfer-case mounting flange and the snap-ring bore, and it happens most on trucks that see off-road work or a hard hit to the transfer case. A cracked housing weeps ATF and can let the output shaft move around, so once it is split there is no fixing it. Most techs replace it during a 48RE rebuild when the original comes in damaged, or on its own when a good transmission is stuck with a broken tailhousing.
Fits 2003-2009 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 running the 48RE behind the 5.9L or 6.7L Cummins, plus the 2003 8.0L V10 gas trucks, when the truck is equipped with the NP271 or NP273 transfer case. It will not fit NP241 transfer cases, so confirm which case is under your truck before ordering.
Bench note: you reuse your own output shaft, snap ring, and seals. One thing installers run into is that the snap-ring cover holes may need to be tapped before final assembly. Set it up with a fresh gasket and torque the housing bolts and transfer-case hardware to the factory values.
