68RFE Transmission Input Shaft for 6.7L Cummins Ram

This is a replacement input shaft for the Chrysler 68RFE six-speed automatic behind the 6.7L Cummins. It replaces OE part number 68029247AA (68029247) and cross-references to 299600. The shaft is forged alloy steel, induction heat-treated, with ground splines and drilled lube passages that match the factory torque converter hub and input clutch hub.

Why it fails: the stock 68RFE input shaft is the known weak link when a Cummins is tuned or towing heavy. A twisted or sheared shaft shows up as sudden loss of drive in every gear with the engine still revving, or as a shaft with stripped converter splines found on teardown. Worn splines can also cause a clunk on engagement and metal in the pan.

On the bench: the shaft comes out with the input clutch assembly after the pump is pulled. Check the converter hub splines and the input clutch hub for matching wear before reassembly, replace the sealing rings on the shaft, and verify the shaft turns freely with correct end play once the pump is torqued. Replacing the converter at the same time is recommended if the hub splines are chewed up.
