About this product

This is a seven-piece seal ring installer and resizer set for the Ford 6R140 TorqShift six-speed. It replaces the OEM special service tools T-307653SAC and T-307657SAC and covers the input shaft, turbine shaft, stator support and front stator support sealing rings. In the box are four downsizing sleeves, two guided seal expanders and one drive handle. Applications are Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 from 2011 up, E-350 and E-450 from 2012 up, and F-650 and F-750 from 2016 up.

The 6R140 uses rigid scarf-cut Teflon sealing rings rather than cast iron or rubber. A new Teflon ring comes out of the bag coiled larger than the groove it belongs in, and once you snap it onto the shaft it stands proud of the shaft diameter. It will not go into its bore in that condition. The expander cone opens the ring just enough to walk it over the shaft and down into the groove without cracking or twisting it, then the matching downsizing sleeve slides over the top and squeezes the ring back to bore diameter and holds it there while the material takes a set. Give each ring a few minutes under the sleeve before you pull it off, then check that the ring spins freely in its groove and the scarf joint is closed.

The failure this prevents is the one that shows up after the transmission is back in the truck. Forcing a proud Teflon ring into a bore rolls it, shaves the edge off it, or cracks it at the scarf joint. The result is cross-leak between circuits at the stator support: low line pressure, delayed or slipping engagement, harsh or flaring shifts, and a converter that will not lock consistently. None of that is fixable from the outside, so a rolled ring means pulling the unit back out. Doing it with a proper expander and sleeve set is a ten minute step at the bench that removes the guesswork.

The downsizing sleeves are cut with alignment gaps and slots so you can look through and confirm the ring is actually sitting in its groove while it is compressed, instead of installing blind and hoping. The sleeves are molded from a hard, wear-resistant polymer with a burr-free bore so they will not scratch the sealing surfaces of the shaft or the ring itself, and they hold their size across repeated rebuilds.
