About this product

This is the full overhaul package for the Mercedes-Benz 722.4, the four-speed rear-drive automatic that sat behind the smaller four- and six-cylinder engines through the early 90s. It is the lighter-duty sibling of the 722.3 and shows up in the W201 190, the W124 300 series, and the first W202 C-Class cars. The kit carries the gasket and seal overhaul set, the friction plates and the steel plates in one box, so you are not cross-referencing three separate part numbers to get a unit back together.

Fitment as listed by the manufacturer: Mercedes-Benz 190 1990-1993 with the 2.3L four or 2.6L six, 300 1991-1993 with the 2.5L five or 2.6L and 3.0L sixes, and C-Class 1994-1996 with the 2.2L four or the 2.8L and 3.6L sixes, all with the four-speed automatic. Read the number stamped on the transmission before you order. A 722.3 out of a heavier car looks similar on the bench but does not share this clutch stack.

On the bench, the frictions and steels in this kit go into the K1, K2 and B2 packs; the gasket and seal portion covers the pan gasket, the pump and output shaft lip seals, the piston lip seals and the case O-rings. The failure this addresses is the classic high-mileage 722.4 complaint: delayed engagement into drive or reverse when cold, a slip or flare on the 1-2, and burnt fluid on the dipstick. That is hardened piston lip seals bleeding apply pressure and glazed frictions that can no longer hold. Replacing the seals without the frictions, or the frictions without the seals, puts the unit back on the road with half the problem still in it.

Two things to check while you have it apart. Set your clutch pack clearances with a depth micrometer against the factory spec rather than assuming the new plates land where the old ones did, and inspect the vacuum modulator and its line before you button the pan up. A leaking modulator line drops line pressure and will cook a fresh rebuild the same way it cooked the one you just pulled out.
