The U140E and U140F is the 4-speed automatic Toyota ran behind the 2.4L and 3.0L in a lot of early-2000s front- and all-wheel-drive cars. When one of these starts slipping on the 2-3 shift, flaring on the way into overdrive, or dropping into a harsh or delayed engagement after it warms up, the friction material is worn down and the fluid is full of clutch debris. This is the master kit you use to put the unit back to a fresh baseline instead of chasing it with additives.
The kit is built around a full overhaul gasket and seal set, a complete set of friction (clutch) plates, and the matching steel plates. On the bench you tear the transaxle down, wash and inspect the drums, pistons, and pump, then reassemble with the new frictions and steels soaked in ATF, new lip seals and O-rings on every piston, and the fresh gaskets on the pump and valve body. That covers the wear parts that actually cause a U140 to slip and burn.
Fitment covers Toyota Camry 3.0L (2002-2003) FWD, Highlander 2.4L and 3.0L (2001-2007) AWD, Matrix 2.4L (2009) AWD, and RAV4 2.0L and 2.4L (2000-2008), plus the Lexus ES300 (1999-2001) and RX300 (1999-2003) that share the U140/U240 family. Note this is a soft-parts master kit. It does not include a filter, hard parts, the torque converter, or a solenoid set, so order those separately if your teardown shows they are worn. Plan on a full ATF fill of the correct Toyota Type T-IV/WS fluid on reassembly.
