Complete valve body with shift and pressure solenoids installed for ZF 6HP19 and 6HP26 automatics in BMW 3, 5 and 7 Series, Jaguar, Audi and VW.
This is a complete valve body assembly for the ZF 6HP19 and 6HP26 six-speed automatic, sold with the shift and pressure control solenoids already fitted so you are not robbing solenoids off the old unit. It covers the 6HP19 and 6HP26 families and their A-variants (6HP19A, 6HP26A) used behind longitudinal engines in BMW 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series and X3 and X5, Jaguar S-Type, XF, XJ and XK, Audi A6 and A8, VW Touareg, and Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover from the mid-2000s on.
These boxes fail in a pattern. Solenoid current drift and worn bores in the valve body give you a hard or flaring 2-3, a delayed thump into Drive or Reverse when cold, torque converter lockup shudder at light throttle, and eventually a P0700 with limp home locked in third or fifth. Once a bore is worn or a solenoid is out of calibration, cleaning and a new filter will not bring the shift quality back - the hydraulic circuit has to be replaced. Replacing the valve body as an assembly is the fix that sticks, and it is far cheaper than a full mechatronic unit or a rebuilt transmission.
Bench work is straightforward if you are already dropping the pan. Drain the fluid, drop the pan and filter, unplug the internal harness and pull the sleeve/adapter connector, then unbolt the valve body in the factory sequence and support it as it comes down so the check balls and separator plate stay put. Keep the bolts sorted by length - they are not all the same on these units. On reassembly torque the valve body bolts evenly, install a new pan gasket and filter, and refill through the fill plug with the correct ZF Lifeguard 6 spec ATF to the fill-plug temperature window. These transmissions have no dipstick, so the level has to be set hot, on level ground, with the engine running.
After the swap, clear stored codes and let the TCU relearn adaptations over a few dozen shifts. If the car had been slipping badly before the repair, inspect the pan for clutch material - a valve body will not save a transmission that has already cooked its packs.
