10R80 Transmission Clutch Drum Piston Compressor Tool Set

This is a three-piece clutch drum piston compressor set for the Ford 10R80 ten-speed automatic and its General Motors twin, the 10L80. The 10R80 stacks six clutch packs into a short case, and every one of those drums holds its piston down with a return spring under a snap ring. You cannot get the ring out with your thumbs, and you cannot safely lever it out either, so the drum has to be pushed down squarely while the ring comes free. That is the one job this set does.

On the bench you set the drum on a press or clamp the compressor over it, seat the plate on the spring retainer, and take the load off the ring evenly across the full face instead of on one edge. With the spring compressed the snap ring lifts straight out of its groove with a pick, and the piston, lip seals and retainer come apart without the piston launching or the ring distorting. Reassembly is the same move in reverse, which matters more than the teardown because a snap ring that gets sprung out of round during install will walk out of the groove later and take the drum with it.

The units it fits are the ones showing up in shops now: F-150 from 2017 up, Expedition and Navigator from 2018 up, Mustang GT from 2018 up, Ranger from 2019 up, and Explorer and Aviator from 2020 up on the Ford side, plus the GM 10L80 in Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon and Camaro. These transmissions come in for harsh or flared 1-2 and 4-5 shifts, shudder, and burnt clutch material in the pan, and all of those repairs end with the clutch drums apart on the bench. Three pieces, machined steel, and the whole set weighs a little over a pound, so it lives in a drawer rather than taking up a bench spot.
