Replacement 4R70W valve body assembly for Ford F150 and Explorer 2001-2008, also covering 4R75W and 4R75E, when shifts go erratic or drop out.
This is a complete 4R70W valve body assembly for Ford's four-speed automatic behind the 4.6L and 5.4L modular V8. It covers the 4R70W and the later heavier-duty 4R75W and 4R75E, and is listed for F-150 and Explorer from 2001 through 2008. The 4R70W is the wide-ratio development of the AODE, so the same casting family also turns up under Expedition, Econoline, Crown Victoria and Mustang of that era - check your unit against the vehicle list before you order.
Valve bodies on these units fail from wear, not from breakage. The bores that carry the main pressure regulator and the boost valve wear oval, the separator plate frets around the high-flow feed holes, and the solenoid regulator valve starts to stick in its bore. What the driver feels is a 3-4 flare, a harsh or delayed 1-2, a soft engagement into drive, slipping under load once the fluid is hot, or overdrive dropping out entirely. Line pressure that reads fine cold and falls off hot is the classic cross-leak signature. Once a bore is worn, no amount of fluid, filters or solenoid swapping brings the pressure back - the body has to be reamed and sleeved or replaced, and replacing is the faster call on a truck that has to go back to work.
Replacing it is a pan-down job with the transmission in the vehicle. Drop the pan and drain it, pull the filter, unplug the internal wiring harness at the solenoids, then take the valve body bolts out and lower the body while keeping the manual valve engaged with the pin on the shift lever. Watch the check balls: they sit in the case pockets and in the body, and one that stays behind or falls out will give you a brand new complaint after the job. Fit a new filter and pan gasket, torque the body bolts down evenly in a crossing pattern to spec, then refill and relearn before road testing.
The assembly ships as one machined unit, about 11 pounds boxed. Inspect the mating face and the separator plate before install, and if your old unit came out with a burnt 3-4 clutch or metal in the pan, fix that first - a new valve body will not cover for a failed clutch pack.
Before you replace it, read our step-by-step 4R70W valve body test guide — the symptoms and codes, the line-pressure and vacuum checks, and how to confirm the valve body is the fault. See all 4R70W parts.
