6L80 Transmission Steel Clutch Plate Kit 195753A

This is the complete steel separator plate module for the GM 6L80, 6L80E, 6L90 and 6L90E six-speed automatic, 2006 and up. It supersedes GM numbers 195753A, 195753B and 195753BX and covers the steels for the clutch stacks in the unit, so you are not pulling burnt plates out of one drum and hoping the leftovers from a core will measure the same.

Steels are the half of a clutch pack most rebuilders try to reuse, and it is where a lot of comebacks start. Pull a 6L80 apart after it has been slipping and the separator plates come out blue, heat-spotted, or dished into a shallow cone. A dished steel does not sit flat against the new friction, so the pack grabs on the outer edge, runs hot, and glazes the new material within a few hundred miles. Anything that shows discoloration, grooving you can feel with a fingernail, or rocks when you set it on a flat plate should be replaced rather than cleaned up.

On the bench, dry-stack the new steels and frictions in each drum, install the pressure plate and snap ring, and check clutch pack clearance with a depth micrometer or a dial indicator on a bridge before you soak anything. Build to the GM clearance spec for that specific pack and adjust with the selective plate rather than forcing the stack in. Once the clearance is right, soak the frictions in clean Dexron VI for at least half an hour, reassemble, and air-check each circuit through the case passages so you know the piston strokes and seals before the valve body goes back on.
