8HP65 Transmission Master Rebuild Kit Frictions Steels

Master rebuild kit for the ZF 8HP65 eight-speed automatic, the VAG-code 0D5 unit used behind longitudinal engines in the Audi A4, A6, Q7, Q8, S4, S5, S6 and S8. The set covers the soft parts and the clutch pack material for a full bench overhaul: friction plates, steel plates, case and pan gaskets, shaft seals, lip seals and the O-ring set. The 8HP65A variant uses the same internals.

The 8HP65 is a torque-heavy version of the ZF 8HP family, and what puts these units on the bench is almost always the same pair of problems. First, the clutch material glazes and the pack clearance opens up, which shows as a flare between gears under throttle and a shudder on the lockup apply. Second, the elastomer hardens with heat and age, so the seals stop holding apply pressure and you get delayed engagement into drive or reverse after the car sits overnight. Both of those are soft-parts failures, not hard-parts failures, which is exactly what this kit addresses.

On the bench you strip the unit down to the case, clean and air-check every clutch drum, then reassemble with the new frictions and steels in the stack order the unit came apart in. Soak the friction plates in the correct fluid before they go in - the 8HP series runs a low-viscosity ZF-spec ATF, not a generic Dexron, and dry-stacking the plates on the first apply is a good way to cook them. Set the pack clearance with a dial indicator before the drum goes back together rather than assuming the new plates match the old stack height; the friction and steel thicknesses in an aftermarket set are not always identical to what came out.

This kit is soft parts and clutches only. It does not include the mechatronic unit, the valve body solenoids, the pump, the planetaries or the torque converter. If the unit has a solenoid or mechatronic fault code, diagnose and address that separately - a rebuild kit will not fix an electrical fault in the valve body.
