Ford E4OD/4R100 Deep Pan Transmission Filter & Gasket Kit

This is the deep-pan service kit for the Ford E4OD and 4R100 automatic, the heavy-duty transmission behind the 7.3L Power Stroke diesel, 5.4L V8 and 6.8L V10. It fits units that use the 20-bolt deep pan: F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty (1999-2004), Excursion (2000-2005), 4WD F-150 (1989-2003), Bronco (1990-1996), Expedition and Navigator (1997-2004), and E-Series vans with the deep pan. It is the wrong kit for the shallow 2WD pan and for the 14-bolt 4R70W, so confirm you have the 20-bolt pan before you order.

In the box you get one long-neck (long-tube) pickup filter and one reusable-style 20-bolt rubber pan gasket. The long neck matters on the deep pan: it drops the pickup down into the sump so the pump keeps drawing fluid under towing load instead of sucking air on a grade. On the bench the job is straightforward: drop the pan, pull the old filter straight down off the pump inlet, clean the pan and magnet, press the new filter seal fully into the pump bore, lay the molded gasket on a clean dry flange, and torque the pan bolts evenly. A rubber molded gasket lets you run it dry with no RTV. These transmissions are the known weak point in the 7.3L trucks, so a filter and fluid service on schedule is cheap insurance against slipping and burnt fluid.

Do this any time you are servicing fluid, chasing a shift complaint, or after a cooler flush. If the filter neck seal is loose or the old gasket is compression-set, you get low line pressure, aeration and harsh or delayed engagement, exactly the symptoms a fresh filter and gasket resolve.
