4L60E Low Roller Clutch Assembly, GM OE 24217231

This is the factory GM low roller clutch, part number 24217231, for the 4L60E automatic. It is the caged set of spring-loaded rollers that works as a one-way clutch in the rear of the transmission, holding first gear when the selector is in Drive and freewheeling as the unit shifts into second. It is a GM Genuine Parts piece, not an aftermarket copy.

A worn or broken low roller clutch gives a very specific complaint: the vehicle will not pull away in Drive, or it slips and flares off the line and then picks up once it shifts to second, yet it drives normally from a stop in manual Low. That works in manual Low because the low/reverse clutch is applied there and does the holding instead. If you see that pattern, check the roller clutch and its race before blaming the pump or valve body. Rollers with flat spots, broken springs or a cage that has been run dry are the usual findings.

On the bench: pull the rear planetary components and inspect the inner race for pitting, scoring or a polished groove worn by the rollers; a damaged race will destroy a new roller clutch quickly, so replace it too if it is marked. Lube the new rollers with ATF, install the assembly in the correct direction, and confirm it locks in one direction and freewheels in the other by hand before final assembly.
