This is a set of steel installer and protector sleeves for the GM 4L80E 4th clutch piston, an alternative to tool number T-2926. It gives you the guides needed to reassemble the 4th clutch drum without damaging the piston seals, which is one of the easy places to ruin a fresh rebuild.
The 4L80E 4th clutch piston seals against the drum on both an inner and an outer lip seal. When you press the piston back into the drum by hand, either lip can catch on the sealing bore, fold under, or get nicked. A rolled or cut lip seal shows up later as a 4th clutch apply pressure loss and a slipping or burnt 4th clutch, so it is worth protecting during assembly. The heavy-duty 4L85E shares the same 4th clutch and uses the same setup.
On the bench, slip the matching sleeve over the seal boss or into the bore before you start the piston, lube the seals, then press the piston home. The tapered edge of the sleeve walks each lip in square instead of letting it fold, and you pull the sleeve back out once the piston is started. It beats the old trick of feeding the seal in with a feeler gauge or a thin pick.
