This is the rear band for the GM 4L80E, also used in the 4L85E, BorgWarner part 38014BW. It is a high energy, smooth lining band that fits 1991 and later units. In the 4L80E the rear band applies in reverse and in manual first.
A burned or glazed rear band shows up as no reverse, a slipping or delayed reverse engagement, or a flare when you pull it into manual low. It is also a standard replacement during an overhaul, since the lining takes heat every time the truck backs a trailer up a grade.
With the case open, pull the old band and check the rear servo pin and the drum surface the band rides on. A scored or blued drum will eat a new band, so resurface or replace it. Soak the new band in clean ATF before install, seat the anchor ends in the case, and confirm servo apply travel once the rear servo is back in.
