About this product

The vacuum modulator is what tells a Turbo 350 or 400 how hard the engine is working. It reads manifold vacuum through a hose off the intake and uses that to raise or lower line pressure, which is what sets how firm the shifts feel and how far you have to be into the throttle before it kicks down. When the modulator diaphragm cracks, the shifts go soft and mushy, the trans starts slipping under load, and you will often smell or see ATF getting sucked up the vacuum line and burned in the engine. A five dollar part failing is what cooks a good transmission, so when the symptoms show up this is the first thing to swap.

This one is the adjustable version, which is the one you actually want. An Allen wrench turned into the vacuum port winds the internal spring in or out, so you can move the shift points and firm up the shifts without dropping the pan or touching the valve body. Turn it in for earlier, firmer shifts on a stock or towing setup; back it out to soften things or to match a big-overlap cam that pulls low idle vacuum. The larger-diameter diaphragm reacts more accurately at low vacuum, which is exactly where a lumpy hot-rod cam gives a standard modulator trouble.

It fits the whole GM Turbo family: TH350, TH350C, TH375, TH400 and the 3L80 across the 1969 to 1986 range. Installation is a two-minute job, one snap ring or retaining clip, the modulator, and the vacuum hose, so it is about the easiest transmission fix there is. Keep one on the shelf if you run one of these units, because when the diaphragm lets go you want the fix in your hand, not on a truck two days out.
