Removes and installs the large internal case snap ring on GM 6L80, 6L90, 6L50, 5L40 and 5L50 units; the 26-inch handles give the leverage that ring needs.
This is the 1489-style 26-inch internal retaining ring plier, the tool you need to get the big internal snap ring out of a GM six-speed case. On the 6L80 and 6L90 (and the 5L40, 5L50 and 6L50 before them) the input drum and rear internal components are held by a large retaining ring seated deep in the case bore. That ring is too big and under too much load for a normal snap ring plier, and prying at it with a screwdriver chews up the groove and launches the ring across the shop. These long-handle pliers spread that load out and let you compress and walk the ring in or out in a controlled way.
The long 26-inch handles are the whole point: they multiply your hand force so the straight .120-inch tips can hold a fully compressed ring without the tips popping out of the ring eyes. That extra leverage is what lets one person pull the ring on the bench instead of fighting it with two hands and a prayer. Tips are straight and sized to drop into the factory ring holes.
Built from carbon steel and forged for the load, this is a rebuild-bench tool, not a throwaway. It shows up over and over in 6L80 and 6L90 rebuilds, on the torque tube ring in some C5/C6 Corvette applications, and anywhere a large internal case ring has to come out clean. Keep the tips seated fully in the ring before you squeeze and it will pull rings all day.
