The factory steel pan has no drain plug, so every fluid change on a 4L60E means dropping the pan and wearing ATF. With the drain plug you can pull fluid for a drain-and-fill between filter services, and the magnet catches the fine clutch and gear material so you can read what is going on inside the unit. A dented steel pan from rocks or a jack point can also crowd the filter pickup, which shows up as low line pressure, whine and delayed engagement when hot.
On install, clean the case rail, fit the new gasket dry, and torque the pan bolts evenly in a cross pattern rather than cranking them down, which distorts the flange and starts a weep. Refill with Dexron VI and check level hot with the engine running.
