Front oil pump for the Mercedes 722.6 five-speed, also sold as the NAG1 and W5A580 in Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler applications.
This is the front oil pump for the Mercedes-Benz 722.6 five-speed automatic, the same unit Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep call the NAG1 and Mercedes also badges as the W5A580. It replaces part numbers 2202770320, 1402770220, 1402700197 and 7222700197, and it also covers the 722.9 seven-speed. Housing is cast aluminum with a painted exterior, and the pump ships as a complete assembly at 4.62 lb.
The pump bolts to the front of the case behind the torque converter and is what builds line pressure for the whole unit. On a 722.6 or NAG1 it is a common source of trouble once the gear rotor and bushing wear: line pressure falls off when the fluid gets hot, and you get delayed engagement into Drive and Reverse, slipping under throttle, or a converter clutch that will not hold lockup. A worn pump bushing also lets the converter hub walk, which chews the front seal and leaves a puddle at the bellhousing.
On the bench, this goes in after the case is split and the converter is off. Pull the old pump with the correct slide hammer pullers on the two threaded holes, clean the case face, fit a new pump-to-case O-ring and front seal, then draw the new pump down evenly and torque the bolts in a crossing pattern so the stator support stays square to the input shaft. Check converter hub-to-bushing clearance and endplay before you close it up. Prime the pump with clean ATF before the first start so it is not running dry on initial fill.
Fitment covers Mercedes-Benz 722.6 five-speed 1997 and up and 722.9 seven-speed 2004 and up, plus Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles using the NAG1 / W5A580 five-speed. Confirm your existing pump casting number against the part numbers listed before ordering.
