Complete VT40 CVT valve body that restores line pressure and pulley clamp control on Malibu 1.5L and Encore GX units that shudder or slip.
This is a complete valve body assembly for the GM VT40 continuously variable transmission, the belt-and-pulley unit GM puts behind the 1.5L turbo in the Chevrolet Malibu and the Buick Encore GX. The OE reference on the casting is VT40. It bolts in place of the original without modification and carries the same hydraulic circuit layout, so the solenoid connector, filter feed and pump passages all line up.
The VT40 lives or dies on pulley clamp pressure. When the primary or secondary pressure regulator valve wears its bore, the control circuit cannot hold the commanded clamp load and the belt starts to slip against the sheaves. On the road that shows up as a launch shudder that feels like a bad torque converter, a flare in ratio under light throttle, or an engine that revs while road speed stays flat. Codes P0841, P0846, P0776 and P17BF are the usual set, and a scan tool will show commanded versus actual ratio drifting apart. Once the bores are worn, cleaning the body and swapping solenoids does not bring the pressure back - the body has to be replaced.
On the bench the job is straightforward: drop the pan, pull the filter, unplug the internal harness at the solenoid block, unbolt the body in the factory sequence and lift it out with the check balls kept in order. Set the new body in dry, torque the bolts from the center outward, reconnect the harness, install a new filter and pan gasket, then refill with GM DEXRON-VI CVT fluid to the temperature spec. Clear the transmission adaptations and run a relearn drive cycle so the TCM rebuilds its clamp pressure tables - skipping that step leaves the shudder in place even with a good body under the car.
Fitment covers Chevrolet Malibu 2018 and later (1.5L 2019-2023 is the primary application), Chevrolet Cruze second generation 2018-2020, and Buick Encore GX 2019 and later. Verify the VT40 casting on the unit in the car before ordering - GM also used the 9T45/9T50 nine-speed in overlapping model years and that is a different valve body entirely.
