This is the ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service Group) technical service manual for the GM 4L60-E, the electronic version of the 700R4/4L60 that GM put behind small blocks, Vortec V6 and V8 truck engines, and the LS family from 1993 forward. If you are pulling one apart for the first time, this is the book the rebuild shops actually work out of - ATSG researches, illustrates and prints these in house, and the exploded views and clearance charts are the reason people buy them instead of a generic repair guide.
What is in it: the full disassembly and reassembly sequence, pump and stator bore inspection, the 3-4 clutch and forward clutch pack clearance specs, thrust washer and selective washer charts, end play checking, valve body and separator plate layout with the check ball locations called out, solenoid and electrical connector pinouts, line pressure and shift speed charts, and the diagnostic trouble code list with what each code actually means on this unit.
The 4L60-E fails in predictable places - burnt 3-4 clutches from a worn 3-4 apply piston or a cracked sun shell, no reverse from a stripped sun shell, and a slipping or shuddering torque converter clutch from a scored TCC regulator valve. The manual walks the checks for each of those before you commit to a full teardown, and gives you the check ball diagram so the valve body goes back together right. Keep it on the bench next to the case, not on a shelf.
