4L60E BorgWarner 34036KIT High Energy Friction Module

BorgWarner part number 34036KIT is a friction clutch module for the GM 700R4 / 4L60 family, 1987 through 2000. It is the friction side of a rebuild: the clutch plates for the transmission's clutch packs, with high energy material in the 3-4 pack. BorgWarner is an original equipment friction supplier, so plate thickness and apply feel stay close to factory spec.

Listed fitment is the 700R4 (THM700-R4), 4L60, 4L60E, 4L65E and 4L70E. The 1987-2000 range matters: GM changed clutch counts and drum designs over the years, so count the plates you pull out of each pack and compare them against the kit before you build it up.

The 3-4 clutch is the weak point of this transmission. A burned 3-4 pack shows up as a slip or flare on the 3-4 shift, no fourth gear, or black clutch material in the pan after a hard pull or a heavy tow. High energy frictions tolerate that heat better than standard paper plates, which is why rebuilders put them in trucks, performance cars and anything that tows.

On the bench, soak each friction plate in clean ATF for at least 30 minutes before assembly, stack each pack in the correct order, and set the 3-4 clearance with a feeler gauge rather than guessing. Replace the steels and piston seals at the same time; new frictions against glazed or warped steels will not hold.
