6L80 Torque Converter Bell Housing OE GM 24248031

This is the GM Genuine Parts 24248031 torque converter housing, the aluminum bell housing that bolts to the front of a 6L80 or 6L90 six-speed. On these units the bell housing is not just a cover. The front half of the fluid pump is machined directly into it, so the pump gear pocket, the stator support bore and the converter hub bushing surface all live in this one casting. Replace the casting and you have effectively replaced half the pump.

The reason it comes off the shelf during a rebuild is wear at those machined surfaces. A converter with a worn hub or a failed front bushing walks in the bore and scores it, and a scored bore leaks internally. The symptoms show up as low line pressure at idle, a soft or slipping 1-2, converter clutch shudder and codes, or a unit that builds pressure cold and loses it hot. Once the bore is out of round the usual fix is a machine shop sleeve job with the transmission out and a wait attached to it. Swapping the housing skips that and puts a known-good bore back in the case the same afternoon.

Fitment is 6L80, 6L80E, 6L90 and 6L90E units from 2006 up, the transmission found behind GM truck, SUV and rear-drive car applications including Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Escalade, Camaro and Corvette. Part number 24248031 is the GM Original Equipment number, machined to the same spec as the housing the factory installed rather than a remachined aftermarket casting.

On the bench, transfer the small hardware from the old housing before you set this one in place. It ships as the bare casting, so the line pressure tap bolt, the torque converter inspection covers and the vent tube come off your original unit. Inspect the pump gears and the stator bushing while everything is apart, set pump gear clearance to spec, and use a new pump body gasket and converter seal on reassembly.
