4L60E Master Rebuild Kit with Frictions and Steels, 1994-Up

A master rebuild kit for the GM 4L60E electronic four-speed, listed for 1994-on units. It is the kit you order when the transmission is coming completely apart: it carries the friction plates and the steel plates for the clutch packs, the valve body separator plate gaskets, the case-to-pump gasket, a cork-style pan gasket, the lip and D-ring piston seals, sealing rings, a spread of O-rings, and the front pump seal and rear tailshaft seal. The earlier hydraulic 4L60 (700R4 lineage, 1982-1993) is not the same kit, so do not order this for a non-electronic unit.

This is the right kit for a burned-up 4L60E: slipping in third and fourth, flare on the 3-4 shift, no reverse, or dark ATF with friction material in the pan. Replacing the steels along with the frictions matters here. Steels that have been run hot are often blued or warped, and reusing them on fresh frictions is one of the most common reasons a rebuilt 4L60E comes back slipping.

On the bench: soak every new friction in clean ATF for at least 30 minutes before assembly. Lay the old plates next to the new ones and match count and thickness pack by pack, since 4L60E 3-4 and forward clutch counts changed over the years and between aftermarket upgrades. Lube each piston seal before installing it in the drum, check clutch clearance with a feeler gauge once each pack is assembled, and use the gaskets that match your separator plate. Fit the new front seal to the pump and the rear seal to the case or extension housing last.

Fitment note: the seller lists this for 1994-on 4L60E. Pump seals, valve body gaskets and 3-4 clutch counts differ between early and late production, so compare the kit against your unit before tearing down.
