Controls the torque converter lockup on a GM TH700R4 or 4L60 behind a carbureted or non-computer engine, so 4th gear locks the converter with no aftermarket ECU.
This is the complete kit to control torque converter lockup on a GM TH700R4 (later called the 4L60) when there is no factory computer telling the transmission when to lock. Drop a 700R4 behind a carbureted small block, an early TBI engine, or any swap without the stock TCM, and the converter clutch will not lock on its own. Without lockup you lose the direct 1:1 coupling in 4th, run higher converter slip and fluid temperature, and give up several miles per gallon on the highway. This kit gives the transmission that missing signal.
Painless part 60109 works on both carbureted and fuel injected engines and saves you from buying a separate, expensive standalone controller. A vacuum switch drops lockup under load (so the converter unlocks when you get into the throttle), a 4th gear pressure switch only allows lockup once the transmission is actually in overdrive, and a brake switch releases it the instant you touch the pedal. Together they fire the torque converter clutch solenoid the right way instead of guessing.
Everything for the install is in the box: the vacuum switch, the 4th gear pressure switch, the brake switch, the torque converter lockup solenoid, the wire harness, a new transmission pan gasket, and the mounting hardware. On the bench you drop the pan, mount the internal solenoid and the pressure switch, run the harness out through the case connector, then wire the vacuum and brake switches under the hood and set the vacuum switch so lockup releases under load. Note this 60109 is the early square Weatherpack connector version, which fits the 1981-1990 TH700R4; GM switched the 1990-1993 units (renamed 4L60) to a round 5-pin connector, so confirm your case connector before ordering.
